Movement Schools are public, non-profit charter schools. We are a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization incorporated in North Carolina. We are funded through state and local tax dollars, similarly to traditional public schools. There is no tuition or charge to parents.

Special education is an integral part of Movement School and is not viewed as a separate order. Rather, as an opportunity to participate in the creation and maintenance of a total educational environment suitable for all children. The particular function of special education within Movement is to identify children with exceptionalities and to aid in both regular and special programming to build accommodative learning opportunities for all of our students. We have strived to bring excellence in academics to economically disadvantaged areas of the cities we’re in. We do this through holistic care for students and families, hiring top performing educators and leadership from respected school organizations like KIPP, Achievement First and Uncommon Schools, implementing weekly staff intensives and utilizing proven curriculum.

In 2021-2022 our students scored exceptionally well in math and reading proficiency and exceeded average state EOG scores. We are extremely pleased with these results after only five years of our first school’s existence. Here is a snapshot of our latest results:

PHONICS AND FLUENCY
Our master schedule includes 30 minutes of daily phonics practice for all K-2 students so that we can guarantee they have strong reading foundational skills. We also provide remedial phonics instructions for students in grades 3-5 and special education students.

Reading Mastery (Phonics, Grade K): Reading Mastery is the primary phonics curriculum for all Kindergarten students.

Success for All (Phonics, Grades 1-2): SFA is the main phonics curriculum for students in 1st and 2nd grade.

SHARED READING, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND WRITING
Insight Humanities (Literacy/Social Studies, Grades K-5): Insight Humanities integrates highly-engaging, culturally-relevant content and authentic learning tasks to develop students’ skills in reading, writing and critical thinking. All K-5 homerooms will use these programs for at least 60 minutes per day in an effort to support proficiency across content areas and critical thinking skills. To support our problem based learning framework, there is a project at the end of every unit representing a culmination of the course of study.

Close Reading for Meaning (Literacy, Grades 2-5): This is paired with the humanities block and used in tandem with the humanities curriculum. This literacy curriculum is designed to promote rapid literacy development in grades 2-5. This curriculum focuses on developing deeper comprehension skills—understanding the why, what, and how.

Movement Guided Reading (Literacy, Grades K-5): Each reading block contains 30 minutes of guided reading. This Movement School guided program is based on the curriculum used by the Achievement First charter school network. Students use leveled readers from the nation’s largest multicultural children’s book publisher to grow towards their next reading level.

MATH
At Movement School Raleigh students have over 90 minutes of math instruction daily, opportunities for critical thinking, and exposure to application of skills to real-world problems.

Achievement First Math (Mathematics, Grades K-5): The mission of AF Math is to mold scholars who will not only be successful in K-12 and college, but scholars who will also thrive in the real world. The AF curriculum promotes conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, productive disposition and problem solving.

Contexts for Learning Mathematics (Mathematics Intervention, Grades K-5): Contexts for Learning Mathematics is a rigorous K–6 classroom resource that uses a math workshop environment to teach math standards. This work includes addressing all strands of mathematics, the standards for mathematical practice, as well as daily fluency and problem solving. Contexts for Learning is used as an intervention for students needing additional support.

SCIENCE
Amplify Science (Science, Grades K-5): Amplify Science is a phenomena-based, K–8 science curriculum that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and debate like trained scientists and engineers.

Movement School is a resource to the community 365 days of the year. In addition to our schools, we offer onsite preschool through Movement Pre-K. We also partner with local organizations to offer onsite after-school care. After school and on weekends we make our building available for use to local organizations and nonprofits, and we partner to host camps during the summer.

Movement School also uses local businesses to provide food and custodial services, as well as offers its new, modern building space for community needs such as skill training and events.

All students in Kindergarten and up have busing options within 5 miles of their campus. We do not currently offer busing for Pre-K students.
